She didn’t see Reiss until nearly eight that evening.

She’d only been home an hour herself, had done some chores and was standing in the kitchen making herself a toasted sandwich when he walked in.

“Hi—you’re late,” she smiled, taking a sneaky eyeful of him as he dumped his sports bag and shook off his suit jacket hanging it on the cupboard handle.

“Yeah,” he sighed wearily. “There’s a ton of stuff to get through before I leave. And I dropped by the gym for an hour before coming home.”

Her eyes drifted over the firmness of his physique beneath his fitted shirt; the broad width of his shoulders; the restrained muscular strength. He might be a little obsessed with working out, but the effects looked superb on him.

“Pumping iron suits you.”

“Does it now?” he chuckled.

“Aha.”

She’d tried to sound matter of fact, like she’d been commenting on the nice weather or something, but failed to hit the right note.

“Whether it suits me or not, I need it. It gives me a bit of a buzz.”

She cleared her throat. Reiss having a buzz made her feel hot and bothered. It reminded her how she’d felt in his arms.

“So—how’s it going with the Australian project?”

She didn’t really want to talk about it, but felt she ought to ask. Just thinking Australia thumped her in the gut. It forced her to realise how little of his company she had left, and that hurt. Although their friendship was very new, it had been pretty intense, and she’d miss him so much when he was gone.

“We’re on course, yeah. After a very long phone interview, I’ve finally employed my Ops Manager, Dean Wilson, who I’ll be relying on a lot. He seems to be very on the ball… starting the preliminaries next week.”

“Oh, good.” She took a bite of her sandwich. “That’ll be a help.”

“Yeah, he’s got a lot of contacts in the business, so that’s one weight off my mind.”

He eyed her snack enviously.

“Oh sorry, you wanna share this. It’s Bavarian smoked ham from the deli, with tomato and Encona hot sauce.” She waved the second half at him temptingly.

“How can I possibly resist a bite of that?”

He took it from her hand and took a big bite closing his eyes.

“Nice?”

“Superb. Love the chili hit.”

“Mmm,” she agreed. She loved the fact they both liked spice. Ashton had never liked it.

She grinned as he devoured it in four big bites,

“You got some more ham? Might need another one.”

No surprise there.

“Sure do.” She busied herself chopping the tomatoes and making them another much meatier one to share.

He leaned against the worktop, watching her with folded arms.

“I’ve been thinking, you’ll need some extra help to shift your gear tomorrow. I know I offered to help you, and I stand by that offer, but I can’t come inside Ashton’s house with you.”

She shook her head. “No, I get that, absolutely. And I really didn’t expect you to. I’m sure I’ll manage just fine packing up on my own.” Actually, she wasn’t sure she was going to manage at all.
